CHAPTER 13
LILA
I slipped my headphones off my ears and frowned.
When the knock came at the door again, I knew I wasn't hearing things. I also knew it wasn't Hunter or Parker, because they'd made their own keys and let themselves in when they felt like it. I should be annoyed at them, but I couldn't bring myself to be. Not even when I woke in the middle of the night with one of their cocks inside me.
I set the headphones aside and closed my laptop.
I rolled off the bed and unlocked the door. I opened it a crack and peered out.
I blinked in surprise.
"Zachary? What are you doing here?" I opened the door wider to let my former stepbrother in. He was tall and dark, with blue eyes that reminded me I definitely had a type. The attraction didn't go beyond the physical though.
I liked him, but there was no chance of us hooking up again. Certainly no chance of a relationship. That didn't mean I wasn't happy to see him. I was, it was just strange for him to drop in unannounced. Honestly, it was strange for anyone to drop in to Brutham unannounced. The Academy was tucked away from any major city and we weren't even close to the beach.
"Can I not pay my favourite stepsister a visit?" He kissed my cheek and stepped into the room. "Nice place."
I closed the door behind him. "It's no harbourside mansion, but it's all right," I said. "It's only for another couple of years." The rooms here were comfortable, but half the size of my room at home.
"Yeah, I guess so. I brought you something." He drew his hand out from behind his back and handed me a gift wrapped package. The paper was black, red and gold. My favourite combination. It was sweet of him to remember.
He sat in a chair while I flopped down on my bed and placed the package in my lap.
"You didn't have to get me anything." I pressed my hands into the sides of the parcel, like it was Christmas Day. My fingers sank into something soft.
"Of course I didn't, but I felt like it." He shrugged.
"This is the only reason you are here?" Call me cynical, but it was difficult not to find an ulterior motive wherever I looked. The whole competition between Chloe and I, and the trials at the end of the year, had me jumping at shadows. I knew well enough to know shadows were often more than shadows.
Without answering the question, he nodded towards the package. "Open it."
He crossed his legs, propping his ankle on his opposite thigh. He had the pose of a future master of the universe down pat. Then again, he'd been practising all his life the same way I had. My father was still one of his role models, although they weren't legally family anymore.
I looked down at the parcel. âIt doesnât seem to be ticking.â
Zachary chuckled.
Chloe would have peeled back the tape carefully, trying not to damage the paper.
